There Are Flops, And Flops

Valéry Giscard d'Estaing recently produced a novel about 'a president' and his relationship with 'a princess'.

At first, it was taken as a thinly-disguised claim that he'd enjoyed a fling with Diana. Now it seems it's just fiction.

Either way, it wouldn't have been for me. But the funny thing is, the Telegraph describes it as a 'flop' after it sold 'just 18,000 copies' in its first month or so in print.

If we published flops like that, I'd be writing this from Courchevel 1850*, where 52 sq m, two-bed apartments are currently going for half a million pounds. If I could stand the Russians.

Instead, we publish flops like So That's Why They Call It Great Britain, currently languishing at around 116,000 on Amazon.

It's a cruel world: STWTCIGB is actually a very interesting and amusing book (there's a free extract here) which would make an ideal Christmas present for almost anyone.

*Pointless Courchevel fact: the highest point at 1850 is actually 1,747m

I worked for a British company that last two winters that have hotels and chalets up Courchevel (1300, 1650 and 1850). It was actually an oil sheik that caught the staff's eye rather than a Russian.

Winter 2007-8 and this guy rents out the entire hotel opposite ours for himself and his family. And the one next door for his staff. They arrived in stretch limos. How they got them up the road I'll never know.

He'd never seen snow in his life and he loved it. So much that he rented the same two hotels out for the following week... paying for the relocation of the guests who were supposed to be booked in!

I bet he's not making money flogging books on Amazon. You're in the wrong business, Mr Monday - start digging holes ;)

SADLY, I DON'T THINK PEOPLE ARE INTERESTED IN THE HISTORY OF THIS COUNTRY ANY MORE.
